What Does it Mean to “Write with Care?”
To write with care is to write with intention.
To know there is more than one solution to every communication problem.
And to stay open to being told ‘here’s another way,’ or even, ‘that way hurts others, or hurt me.’
Because communication is powerful. Words can be a weapon. And our first obligation should always be to those with less power than us.

Putting it into Action.
- Employing alt text on images
- Utilizing captions, subtitles, and transcripts
- Writing descriptive hyperlinks and CTA’s
- Designing with high-contrast fonts/backgrounds
- Examining biases
- Using correct pronouns
- Using non-gendered pronouns vs. gendered pronouns (E.g., they vs. he/she, folks vs. guys)
- Staying critical of cultural appropriation (E.g., AAVE, words like “tribe” and “spirit animal”)
- Avoiding ableist language
- Using person-first language or identity-first language, as called for by the community
- Seeking out sensitivity readers when indicated
